Coining AI Brand Drift: A Formal Definition

This article and the formal definition of the concept of AI brand drift is based on enterprise research and workshops across 40+ Fortune 500 clients and a formal collaboration with Semrush's enterprise sales and marketing teams.


Every customer complaint, viral social media post, internal presentation accidentally left public, and leaked memo becomes LLM fuel. Your carefully crafted brand messaging competes directly with unfiltered customer sentiment, info that was never meant to be public and plain old hallucinations. When AI-generated narratives diverge from your intended brand message, that's what we can call AI brand drift. Your brand voice gets hijacked, reconstructed, and redistributed as an alternative "truth".


The Term: AI Brand Drift


During my work with Semrush to help enterprise marketing teams to figure out how to approach their AI-narrated brand, a rising threat became clear: the way LLMs can distort things impacts customers and business bottom lines. AI Brand Drift is the systematic degradation of brand narrative accuracy that occurs when large language models synthesize disparate data sources into authoritative-sounding responses that deviate from an organization's intended messaging, positioning, and factual representation.



This definition is based on a practical application of the study of semantic drift in text generation published in 2024 by FAIR, Meta and Anthropic researchers. Here is their formal definition of the phenomenon observed beyond the marketing and branding context:


“Semantic drift describes the phenomenon wherein generated text diverges from the subject matter designated by the prompt, resulting in a growing deterioration in relevance, coherence, or truthfulness.” - A., Hambro, E., Voita, E., & Cancedda, N. Progressive Contamination: Error Amplification Through Conversation


Each turn in one conversation thread compounds inaccuracies through sequential text generation, where initial errors become embedded assumptions for subsequent outputs. This means that the context window of the model becomes polluted at some point.


Example: A user asks ChatGPT about about a product's features. The model incorrectly identifies some non-existent feature, constructs elaborate setup instructions, pricing tiers, and integration requirements for the phantom feature. It's a reality for some companies like Streamer Bot.


The fabricated feature becomes established context within the conversation thread, generating increasingly detailed misinformation that creates more support tickets and erodes brand trust.


Distorted Public Truth

Training algorithms assign equal weight to official press releases and accidentally published internal presentations, or "fun" statements, creating narrative confusion at the model level.


A very interesting example found on LinkedIn is an April Fool's day post.


Authoritative Synthesis

AI presents drifted content with the same confidence and formatting as factual information, making detection impossible for end users. An example of this would be false login pages or phishing URLs. Netcraft published a study on the topic:

Across multiple rounds of testing, we received 131 unique hostnames tied to 97 domains. (...) 34% of all suggested domains were not brand-owned and potentially harmful.

This, couple with rapidly evolving search behaviors means that companies should be actively monitoring their presence in generative search results (on LLMs like ChatGPT but also in AI Mode and AI Overviews).
